Chapter Twelve

For the next two weeks, it seemed I did nothing other than work on the masquerade ball, as well as Opal Barclay’s death. They were the only things I had on my mind, and I was determined to find out who killed Opal and to throw the best masquerade ball this town had ever seen. Or at least the best one of the decade.

I decided to try out a pumpkin spice cheesecake for the ball. It was Halloween, after all, and we needed more pumpkin in the mix. I made two large pumpkin spice cheesecakes, as well as a small one for Alec and me to sample, and then I made some pumpkin spice cupcakes to take over to Henry’s. I picked up one of the cheesecakes from the backseat of my car and carried it into the restaurant. The owner, Cynthia Hoffer, was in her office with the door open when I passed by. “Good morning, Cynthia.”

Cynthia looked up at me from the computer on her desk and smiled. “Good morning, Allie. What deliciousness did you bring us today?”

I held up the cheesecake. “Pumpkin spice cheesecake. I hope you like pumpkin spice.”

She nodded. “What’s not to like about pumpkin spice? I’m sure it’s going to be delicious as usual.”

“Thank you. I appreciate hearing that, and I hope it’s delicious, too. I’m going to put it on the kitchen counter and go get the rest of the items from the trunk of my car to bring in. I also brought some pumpkin spice cupcakes with cream cheese frosting today.”

“Oh, now you’re just being cruel. Don’t torture me with thoughts of pumpkin spice cupcakes.”

“I’m not going to torture you. I’m going to give you one so that you don’t even have to wait until lunch to have it.”

“You’re my favorite person, Allie.”

I chuckled and took the cheesecake into the kitchen and set it on the counter. Charles Allen was the head cook at the restaurant, and he turned to me, narrowing his eyes. The two of us didn’t always get along, so I stopped and eyed him back. “How are you doing, Charles?”

He snorted and turned away. “Fine.”

I shook my head, and that was when I noticed the new dishwasher standing at the sink, up to his elbows in soapy water. It was Bryson Barclay, Genevieve Barclay’s son.

“Hello, Bryson,” I said, stepping closer. “I didn’t know that you worked here at Henry’s.”

He turned to look at me and then grinned. Bryson and my daughter Jennifer had gone to high school together, although he had graduated several years before she did. “Oh, hey there, Allie. Yeah, I just started last night.”

I nodded, crossing my arms in front of myself. “Well, good for you. I’m sure Cynthia is a wonderful person to work for.”

He grinned. “Yeah, she seems really nice.”

When the richest woman in town dies, and her grandson has to work as a dishwasher at a restaurant, it made me wonder. “Have you seen Jennifer around lately? She’s in college during the week, but most weekends she comes home.
